Theresa Lau is an attorney with experience working with clients and community advocates, advancing impact litigation, and leading health care policy campaigns.
Theresa is currently Civil Rights Counsel and on the Oversight Team and HELP Committee of the United States Senate.
Theresa was previously Senior Counsel on the Strategy and Policy Team at the National Women's Law Center. Theresa primarily led the NWLC's Judges & Courts portfolio, which focuses on judicial nominations campaigns and the impact of the courts on the fight for gender justice. She also worked on the organization's transition personnel process and various cross-cutting transition efforts.
Prior to joining NWLC, she was a National Asian Pacific American Bar Association Law Foundation Fellow at the National Center for Law and Economic Justice where she advanced impact litigation on behalf of low-income communities and implemented a community-based health care access project.
Theresa is a graduate of Wellesley College and American University Washington College of Law. Because of her previous commitment to public service, she received a merit-based Public Interest Public Service scholarship to attend AUWCL. During law school, Theresa was involved in various organizations focused on empowering women and marginalized people. She interned at the Legal Aid Society of DC in their Public Benefits Unit. She was a dean's fellow for the National Immigrant Women's Advocacy Project. She was a student attorney for the Women and the Law clinic. She also interned for the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights in their Fair Housing and Community Development Unit.
Before law school, she worked at the Federal Trade Commission and the District of Massachusetts U.S. Attorney's Office. She was a field volunteer for the Elizabeth Warren for Senate 2012 campaign. She was also an Asian American Women's Political Initiative Fellow at the Massachusetts State Legislature where she worked in the Committee on Children and Families for State Representative Kay Khan. Theresa is dedicated to public service and taking an intersectional approach to improving the lives of those most impacted.
