As Executive Director of Citymeals-on-Wheels, a $19.5 million New York City-based charity that provides more than 2 million hand-delivered meals every year to 18,000 frail homebound elderly, Beth Shapiro brings to the table expertise in numerous areas including food insecurity, malnutrition, hunger and isolation among the elderly, and widespread cost implications of the country’s rapidly growing elderly population.

Shapiro’s skills include effective public-private partnership management; not-for-profit board development; community and corporate engagement; marketing; and fundraising, particularly new media’s role in not-for-profit development efforts.

At the height of the nation’s recent economic crisis, when charitable giving dropped precipitously, through smart fiscal management, Shapiro was able to maintain the Citymeals promise that 100% of every dollar raised from the general public would directly fund meal programs.

Between 2007 and the present, Shapiro, an experienced marketing strategist, also oversaw a 586% increase in web donations. Over the same period, strategic outreach has increased volunteerism -- growing the number of individual volunteers from 1,911 to 12,481. Volunteer hours at Citymeals, including individual, corporate and restaurant industry volunteerism, have also skyrocketed, increasing to more than 55,000 hours of service, an almost 20% increase from the previous year.

In her more than eight years at the organization – the last two-and-a-half as Executive Director – Shapiro has responded to the growing crisis of malnutrition among NYC’s elderly with the introduction of new programs. Key among them is a new Mobile Food Pantry that provides extra food to meal recipients who are most at risk.

An experienced and polished public speaker, Shapiro’s media appearances have included FOX News, Bloomberg, the Associated Press, CBS, Crain’s New York Business magazine and myriad print and broadcast interviews in New York City media.
