Angela Esquivel Hawkins is a higher education administrator with over 12 years of experience in crisis management, public speaking, advocacy, and project management experience. She currently serves as the Associate Director of Educational Programs in the Office of the Vice Provost for Graduate Education (VPGE) at Stanford University. Angela graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Southern California, and she also holds a Master of Arts in Higher Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
A survivor of sexual assault, Angela has committed herself to leveraging traumatic experiences into powerful catalysts for change. From 2011-2015, Angela taught a sex-positive, consent-based course in Human Sexuality to undergraduates at the George Washington University, work she was inspired to do after serving as a rape crisis counselor for the District of Columbia Rape Crisis Center (DCRCC). After completing the DCRCC's intensive 65-hour training program, she completed over 300 hours of volunteer service hours answering calls on the hotline and meeting survivors at the hospital who were receiving forensic medical examinations. Since working with DCRCC, Angela co-founded her own non-profit organization, the As One Project, and currently serves as its CEO. The As One Project is the first national non-profit to provide resources and support exclusively for friends and family members of survivors of sexual violence.
In July of 2012, Angela was asked to speak alongside Senators Boxer (D-CA), Murray (D-WA), and Blumenthal (D-CT) at a United States Senate press conference in support of the re-authorization of the bi-partisan Violence Against Women Act. Angela’s voice was one of many that ultimately led to Congress passing this significant legislation in February 2013.
Angela currently lives in Northern California with her wife. In her free time, Angela teaches private voice lessons and volunteers as a frequent panelist with the Family & Children Services of Silicon Valley’s LGBT Speaker’s Bureau.
