Bio

Suman Sorg is the founder and principal of Sorg Architects located in Washington, DC and New Delhi, India. She is an expert in architecture, building design, urban developments, and historic preservation and renovations.

Established in 1986, the Sorg Architects’ extensive international portfolio includes multi-family residential, commercial, educational, institutional and civic projects. In a given year, Sorg Architects has completed design for up to $1 billion in construction value and has projects under design with individual construction costs over $400 million. With a focus on excellence in design for public buildings, Sorg Architects has designed more than 8 US Embassies abroad and a myriad of federal and municipal project throughout the Washington DC region and country. Suman’s recently published book, titled Modern in Context, explores her design philosophy which strives for simplicity, clarity of design, and for an integrated approach to preserving and protecting the environment.

Suman’s work has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including 27 awards from the American Institute of Architects, and multiple honors from national and regional industry associations and from the firm’s clients. She has appeared on NPR, HGTV’s Dreamhouse, The Washington Business Journal, lectured for the AIA, National Building Museum, Urban Land Institute, Center for Architecture in New York, the US Department of State, and several colleges and universities.

Suman is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and currently serves as a trustee for the National Building Museum. She is a Peer Reviewer for the General Services Administration Design Excellence Program, and serves as a trustee for the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation.

Suman began her studies in architecture at the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India, and completed graduate work in Historic Preservation at Cornell University. Suman served as a Peace Corps volunteer in the Ivory Coast prior to settling in Washington and starting her firm.
