Supervisor Nora Vargas was sworn in on January 4, 2021, as the first Latina, first immigrant, and first woman of color in the history of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. She was unanimously elected Vice-Chair of the Board by her peers.

Vice Chair Vargas is Co-Chair of the County's COVID-19 subcommittee and is leading efforts to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19, focusing on economic recovery from an equity lens. She also serves as Chair for SANDAG’s Transportation Committee and the Air Pollution Control District, where her priorities include promoting environmental and climate justice to support communities that have been disproportionately impacted. Additionally, as Vice Chair for the Regional Task Force on Homelessness’ Continuum of Care Advisory Board, Vice Chair Vargas is working to ensure barriers are removed and the region’s unsheltered population have access to the wraparound services they need.

Prior to her election to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, Vice Chair Vargas served as member of the Southwestern College Governing Board, the only public institution of higher education in San Diego’s South County. Vice Chair Vargas also served as the first Latina Executive for Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest.

For the last 25 years, Vice Chair Vargas has worked to drive positive change and serve her community through public service. She has served on numerous local, statewide, and national boards and commissions. She currently serves as a Board member for the National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO) and Mothers Out Front, and is an Advisory Board member for Hispanas Organized for Political Equality (HOPE), Equality California and the San Diego LGBT Community Center's South Bay Youth Center.

Vice Chair Vargas is proud to serve the more than 630,000 residents of District 1 which encompasses the incorporated cities of Coronado, Imperial, Beach, Chula Vista, National City and communities within the City of San Diego, including Barrio Logan, Chollas View, Grant Hill, La Playa, Lincoln Park, Logan Heights, Memorial, Mount Hope, Mountain View, Nestor, Otay, Palm City, Point Loma, San Ysidro, Shelltown, Sherman Heights, Southcrest, Stockton, Sunset Cliffs and part of Downtown San Diego. The district also includes the unincorporated communities of Bonita, Sunny-side, Lincoln Acres and East Otay Mesa.
