Bio

Maria Svart is National Director of the Democratic Socialists of America, a national political organization with local groups rooted in every state, funded and run democratically by members, that seeks to build a mass movement and transfer power from the ruling elite to the working class, and gain freedom & democratic control over all aspects of our society. Prior to her role as National Director, she was on the organization's national board, and prior to that one of the national co-chairs of its student wing, the Young Democratic Socialists of America. An alumnus of the University of Chicago, she worked ten years in the labor movement with the Service Employees International Union, including organizing resident physicians during the fight for the Affordable Care Act. Svart has been interviewed for the New York Times, CNN, Al Jazeera, The New Yorker, NBC, Fox News, The Washington Post, National Public Radio, C-Span, the Daily Show, Bustle, and others, and has been published in USA Today, the New York Daily News, In These Times and Truthout.
