Bio

Laura Jiménez became the Executive Director of California Latinas for Reproductive Justice in September 2011. She holds a Master’s Degree in Ethnic Studies from San Francisco State University. Laura has over 20 years of experience working with women of color organizations across the country on issues of reproductive justice, including the National Latina Health Organization (Oakland), the Dominican Women’s Development Center (New York) and being part of the founding of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective (Atlanta).

Laura is passionate about issues of birthing and parenting, and how they connect with reproductive justice. This passion was fuelled by her own personal experiences of pregnancy, birth, and through organizing and participating in the Community Birthing Project in New York City, which provided a doula the opportunity for women of color to offer birth support to low-income communities of color. Laura also developed her expertise on the connections around immigrant rights and reproductive justice during her time living in the South when anti-immigrant sentiment was rising and she was able to integrate conversations about these intersections as examples of reproductive oppression through trainings she developed at SisterSong. Her current work at California Latinas for Reproductive Justice has presented the opportunity to work on issues of immigrant rights and economic justice.

In the last year, she has appeared on Univisión’s national news program, Primer Impacto and the local affiliate’s morning news program, Primera Edición, as well as being featured in Cosmopolitan.
