Emily L. Rice is an assistant professor of astronomy and physics in the Deptartment of Engineering Science & Physics at the College of Staten Island (City University of New York), faculty in the physics Ph.D. program at The Graduate Center, CUNY, and a resident research associate in the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. She earned her Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics from UCLA in 2009. Her astrophysics research focuses on low mass stars, brown dwarfs, & exoplanets by studying their spectra and modeling their atmospheres. She is a co-author on more than twenty scientific papers and her research has been supported by grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation. She is co-author of a lab manual for introductory college-level astronomy courses published by Pearson Higher Education. She regularly presents live shows at the Hayden Planetarium and organizes Astronomy on Tap events in New York City bars as hosts them as her alter ego, DJ Carly Sagan. She is co-founder and contributor for the science fashion blog STARtorialist, and some of her past projects include advising astrophysics videos for AMNH's Science Bulletins and writing for the Cosmic Discoveries iPhone app. Emily has appeared on BBC World News, National Public Radio, Fox Business Channel, and CUNY television.
