Bio

Carli Pierson is a multi-lingual (Spanish, English, French) New York-licensed attorney, and an Opinion Writer for USA TODAY. She received her B.A. in Islamic World Studies with a minor in French from DePaul University in 2002; she received her JD, Cum Laude, from Nova Southeastern University's Shepard Broad Law Center in 2012. Carli was the first person in the U.S. to receive an undergraduate degree in Islamic Studies. She has worked for the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado, the Attorney General of Florida, Alston & Bird, LLP., and under the late M. Cherif Bassiouni at the I.S.I.S.C. on international criminal law, international humanitarian law and international human rights law. She has also taught human right law and Mexican constitutional law at the Universidad Autonoma de Campeche and the Tec Monterrey, both in Mexico.
