Bio

Anya Alvarez is a former professional golfer, from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She attended the University of Washington on a full-athletic ride, majoring in history, with an emphasis on American history. During her time in college, she developed a passion for women's issues and writing, and later merged that passion with sports. And since the age of 16, she has also been an advocate against sexual assault, speaking on her personal experiences of child sexual abuse and rape, speaking on national platforms such USA Today, Golf Channel, CBS Morning News, and Dr. Phil.

Anya played golf professionally for three years, and left the sport to pursue her passion of writing and advocacy. During her time as a writer, she has written for various outlets, such as Rolling Stone, VICE Sports, ReWire, and Slate Magazine. She focuses on covering women in sports, and also the issues that directly impact female athletes, and the social constructs limiting female athletes from having a higher profile. In 2016, VICE Sports chose one of Anya's pieces as part of their best sports writing in 2016. She is currently in the process of developing a podcast with Soolmaz Abooali, an Iranian-refugee who is an 11-time U.S. National Karate Champion, finishing her PhD in public policy, with her dissertation being on conflict resolution through sport. The purpose of the podcast is to highlight how sport can be used for diplomatic measures, and give historical context to sports and their political impact. Today, she is a Freelance Writer for ESPN and the founder of Major League Girls: a website that highlights girls in sports.
