Bio

Alex Johnston is a fertility advocate and author of Inconceivable: My Life-Altering, Eye-Opening Journey from Infertility to Motherhood.

Fueled by her personal journey and extensive policy and reproductive healthcare research, she works to raise awareness about infertility and its role as an enormous factor impacting the choice to become a parent. Alex is a relentless advocate for greater awareness and understanding of infertility and health policy reforms that support inclusive family-building.

She previously served as a senior policy advisor in the Ontario government for justice, social, and women’s issues, and she’s the former Executive Director of the Canadian office of Catalyst Inc., a global non-profit advocating for the advancement of women in business. Alex is also the current CEO of 360 Concussion Care, an integrated network of concussion clinics offering physician-led, multi-disciplinary care and operating as a learning health system with a mandate to develop and share world-leading concussion research and best practices.

Her path to advocacy work started 15 years ago when Alex first started trying – and struggling – to get pregnant. She received outdated medical information and erroneous advice. Unfortunately, this incorrect information is still widely offered to women today, and barriers to accessing treatment haven't changed. In her book, Alex shares what she learned on her own path to parenthood, including navigating infertility and IVF treatments, surviving the loss of her first child, having two daughters through surrogacy, and finally, after many years of trying, giving birth to a baby boy the old-fashioned way. All the while, Alex fought for a government policy change through her work in government to better support other women trying to build their families.

Alex grew up in Montreal and earned her law degree from McGill University. She now lives in Toronto where she and her husband are raising their three young children.
