Kate McCarthy

Bio

Kate McCarthy is the Director of Programs for the Women's Media Center with responsibility for WMC SheSource – our database of women experts - and WMC training. She works to amplify women’s voices in the media by ensuring that journalists and producers have access to a wide range of qualified diverse experts.

Kate is an experienced leader and political campaigner with exceptional field and online expertise. For seven years she was at the cutting edge of online political campaigning, as the head of the UK Labour Party’s e-campaign department. In that position she developed the Labour Party’s first and subsequent online election strategies using multiple websites, mobile, video, email, social media, blogs, games, and online conversations with two prime ministers and hundreds of senior politicians.

Previously Kate worked as Director of Candidate Services for Voters For Choice, a pro-choice political action committee (helping elect hundreds of pro-choice candidates at the Federal and State levels). She was the first Field Director of Choice USA (now Urge), a national organization focused on developing the next generation of activists and leaders, expanding voter registration, and countering right wing efforts to limit women’s reproductive freedom.

Early in her career, Kate helped develop and was deputy director of CHOICE/ HIPACT educational organizations that encouraged young people from non-traditional backgrounds into higher education and worked with a network of universities across the UK to recognize talent in all of Britain’s schools.

An internationalist, Kate has run trainings in Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, Trinidad and Tobago, Russia, Britain and the USA. She has served on UNICEF’s Parliamentary Advisory Group (UK), Hansard Society’s online consultancy program, Board of Metro Teen AIDS and Acklam Playcentre management committee.

Kate is British and lives in Washington, DC.
