Storify: A conversation with a journalist who has doggedly covered rape in South Sudan
WMC Women Under Siege hosted a Twitter chat on June 1 with Amanda Sperber, a freelance foreign correspondent whose comprehensive coverage of rape in South Sudan has been published by outlets like Vice and Foreign Policy. She talked about what it’s like to walk into a displaced-persons camp to try to find stories about how the war is affecting women—without offending people who are already traumatized, and desperately hungry. Sperber also explained the challenges of getting stories of sexualized violence published when so many Western media outlets dismiss reports of violence against women as not newsworthy.
