This week we feature experts on International Human Rights Day, women in STEM as the White House announces new initiatives, campus sexual assault after the Rolling Stone's UVA campus rape story, torture as a CIA report about September 11th Interrogation is released this week, and the Congressional spending package.
Wednesday is Human Rights Day, started by the United Nations in 1950. As the White House emphasizes education for Women in STEM, we FEATURE Dr. Jenna P. Carpenter. Carpenter is Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Director of the Office for Women in Science and Engineering in the College of Engineering and Science at Louisiana Tech University. She has ten years’ experience as an engineering department head and six years as Associate Dean. Her research focuses on integrated science, engineering and mathematics (STEM) curricula at the undergraduate level and the success of women students and faculty in STEM fields. Rolling Stone Magazine retracted its story on campus sexual assault this week and issued an apology. For commentary we FEATURE Wagatwe Wanjuki. Wanjuki is a writer and activist who first got her start blogging and organizing for social change as a co-organizer of the movement at Tufts University for an improved sexual assault policy. As a survivor-turned-activist, she uses her experience to help the most disempowered to use the power of new media to raise the voices of the most marginalized. This week a CIA report detailing the investigation of terrorist suspects and possible torture will be released. As a source, we FEATURE Jennifer Harbury. Harbury is an attorney and human rights advocate who has documented, exposed, and spoken publicly about human rights abuses including those supported by the United States. She has spent the last twenty years working for human rights reforms both in Guatemala and in the United States. Her current work focuses on the long term history and legal consequences of U.S. torture practices from Vietnam to Guatemala to Abu Ghraib. Media includes: C-SPAN, LA Times, PBS and Al Jazeera.
