Dr. Sonja Olson is a small animal and exotic emergency clinician at BluePearl, the largest specialty veterinary hospital in the Southeast. She is a television, print and radio personality, a national lecturer, veterinary educator and adjunct faculty at the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Olson earned her B.A. in Biology, with a minor in English literature, from Barnard College of Columbia University in 1992. She went on to obtain her doctorate in veterinary medicine at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 1996. Prior to and during veterinary school, Dr. Olson has had a strong interest in zoo and wildlife medicine. Initially considering a residency in zoologic medicine, Dr. Olson pursued and completed an internship at a specialty referral practice in Northern Virginia at the South Paws Veterinary Referral Hospital.

It was during the internship at South Paws in which Dr. Olson came to recognize her passion for emergency medicine. Beginning in 1997, she practiced emergency medicine/surgery on companion dogs, cats and exotics for 6 years at the Alexandria Veterinary Emergency Service in Alexandria (AVES), VA. This opportunity allowed her to mature as an emergency clinician, to volunteer her services for wildlife medical care, and to teach senior veterinary students rotating through AVES.

Today, and alongside her duties as an emergency clinician, Dr. Olson is the Head of Emergency Service at Florida Veterinary Specialists. Dr. Olson’s popular Ask-a-Vet segments appear monthly on Fox News’ Owned and Operated Affiliate, WTVT, Fox 13 in Tampa Bay. In addition to her frequent television appearances, Dr. Olson is a regular veterinary guest on Clear Channel radio stations and other television programs in Tampa. She regularly speaks to veterinary students and lectures to the veterinary community on the topic of emergency medicine and critical care. As a hobby and special interest, Dr. Olson travels globally to study wildlife and is active in wildlife conservation efforts.

She is a member of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association (FVMA), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS) and the Association of Avian Veterinary Practitioners (AAVP).

Dr. Olson’s vast knowledge of veterinary medicine, easy going personality and extensive media expertise make her the perfect guest for any program.
