Bio

Shani Jamila is a cultural worker with over a decade of leadership in designing and executing innovative programs that use the arts to catalyze social change. She currently directs the Urban Justice Center’s Human Rights Project in New York City. A Fulbright scholar and experienced radio personality, her work foregrounds the voices and vision of artists, writers and organizers from the African diaspora. Her own travels to more than 35 countries throughout Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe and the Americas deeply inform her photography and collage practice. She has exhibited, lectured, moderated community conversations and performed for institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Lincoln Center, Reginald F. Lewis Museum, Phillips Gallery, Corridor Gallery, Pacifica Radio, NYU and the United Nations. Her career has received recognition in a mural at her alma mater Spelman College and in publications like the New York Times, Trinidad Guardian, the London based literary magazine Sable and ESSENCE—as “One of the 35 Most Remarkable Women in the World.” www.shanijamila.com
