Bio

Sara Baker is a writer and consultant who works for the Association for Progressive Communications as the global coordinator of Take Back the Tech!, a collaborative campaign to encourage women to use technology to counter gender-based violence. Under her coordination, Take Back the Tech! received a Bobs People's Choice Award for Best Online Activism in English, the inaugural GEM-TECH Award from the International Telecommunications Union and UN Women for Efforts to Reduce Threats Online and Building Women's Confidence and Security in the Use of ICTs, and a Prix Ars Honorary Mention for Digital Communities. Sara has developed culturally specific services for victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking; created curricula, guides, and online resources related to gender-based violence; and successfully advocated for legislators, corporations, and civil society to take action. She holds an MA in English with Writing Concentration from the University of Tennessee, and she spoke in 2014 at Harvard University's Berkman Center about the barriers users outside North America and Western Europe face in reporting abuse on social media. She has written and been interviewed for US and international media outlets such as the Washington Post, Time, and the Guardian on the role of technology in both enabling and preventing violence against women.
