Bio

Sangita Nayak is the public relations coordinator for 9to5, National Association of Working Women, an organization dedicated to engendering economic and social justice and equality in the workplace. Founded more than 30 years ago, 9to5 has emerged as a tireless advocate on behalf of working families, committed to a diverse array of initiatives aimed at ensuring fair compensation, fair policies, and a workplace free of discrimination. 9to5’s mission is to win family-friendly policies to help balance work/life responsibilities; make non-standard jobs voluntary and ensure that part-time workers receive fair pay and benefits; eliminate workplace discrimination through education about legal rights of workers; and opposition to punitive welfare policies that prevent women from becoming self-sufficient.

As Public Relations Coordinator, Nayak spearheads all communications and media campaigns for 9to5 on a local and national level. Along with her communications work on behalf of 9to5, Nayak is a leader in 9to5’s Women of Color Caucus. She has co-led diversity trainings for Human Resources Departments and has spoken before a wide variety of groups including APHA and the Global Social Forum on issues pertaining to social justice.

Before joining 9to5 in 2002, Nayak established a successful career as a community organizer on issues regarding public health and corporate accountability, and recently worked for an organization committed to environmental justice.

Nayak has been quoted in a number of news outlets, most recently in LAWCAST, regarding romance at work. Her op-eds have appeared in the Houston Chronicle and the Miami Herald. Ms. Magazine named her as one of the “Women to Watch” in 2000.
