Madeline Garcia Bigelow is the Associate Executive Director and Director of the Domestic Violence Project at the Urban Justice Center, an advocacy and direct legal service organization dedicated to serving New York City’s most vulnerable residents. She founded the Project in 2003, assembling a team of attorneys, social workers, and advocates who work cohesively to address the issues confronted by victims of domestic violence in both a legal and non-legal context.

Ms. Bigelow was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey to Cuban-immigrant parents. She met her husband at Georgetown University Law Center, where she graduated in 1993. They are the proud parents of William, 16, and Emma, 14.

After law school Ms. Bigelow went on to spend the next six years at the Bronx District Attorney’s Office in the Domestic Violence/Sex Crimes bureau, first as an Assistant District Attorney, then as Supervisor of the 2221 unit, which worked closely with law enforcement officials in sex crime and child abuse investigations. Prior to founding the Domestic Violence Project she served as Legal Director of Sanctuary for Families’ Bronx office.
