Kathleen Gerson

Kathleen Gerson, Professor of Sociology and Collegiate Professor at New York University, is a recognized authority on gender, work, and family issues and the author of a series of important books on the dilemmas and choices facing women and men as workers and parents.

Her first book, Hard Choices: How Women Decide About Work, Career, and Motherhood, provided an early framework for understanding the revolutionary changes in women’s work paths and outlooks on motherhood. Her next book, No Man’s Land: Men’s Changing Commitments to Family and Work , examined the often ignored changes in men’s lives. More recently, she teamed with Jerry A. Jacobs on The Time Divide: Family, Work, and Gender Inequality, which shows how and why working time has become a new form of social inequality in America. Gerson’s new book, The Unfinished Revolution: How a New Generation is Reshaping Family, Work, and Gender in America, examines a new generation’s experiences growing up amid changing families and blurring gender boundaries.

Dr. Gerson received her B.A. from Stanford University and her Ph.D. from Berkeley. Since joining the faculty of New York University, she has served as Chair of the Sociology Department and President of the Eastern Sociological Society. Her work has received numerous awards, including the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award for Excellence in Work-Family Research and the Distinguished Feminist Lecturer on Women and Social Change. She frequently contributes to such media as The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The American Prospect, PBS, National Public Radio, and CNN.
