Bio

Debra Merskin, PhD is Professor of Media Studies in the School of Journalism & Communication at the University of Oregon. She has researched and taught classes on topics of race, gender, sexuality and media for more than two decades. Her classes include: Animals and the Media, Nature and the Media, Zombies and the Media, Race, Gender, Diversity, & Media, and Sex and Media.

Debra's first book was Media, Minorities, and Meaning: A Critical Introduction (Peter Lang). She co-edited the book: Critical Thinking About Sex, Love, and Romance in the Media. Her second book is Sexing the Media: How and Why We Do It. Dr. Merskin's most recent book is Seeing Species: Re-presentations of Animals in Media & Popular Culture. Her co-created style guide for journalists and communicators is animalsandmedia.org

Debra obtained her Ph.D. from Syracuse University. She completed coursework for a second Ph.D. in Depth/Ecological Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute.
