Media entrepreneur, author, professional speaker, journalist, and certified teacher Cathy Areu has been called a "magazine maven" by NPR, one of New York City's "most influential women" by the Oxygen TV Network, a "woman of vision" by DC's WashFM, an "infobabe" by Rush Limbaugh, and a popular “liberal analyst” by Bill O’Reilly.
Cathy is best known as a Latina activist in her role as publisher for the national Latina magazine, CATALINA, created in 2001 to break stereotypes and show a positive side of the U.S. Hispanic community. In its first year, CATALINA magazine earned the “Lead Launch” distinction by Folio magazine; and reached an audited circulation of 500,000 by 2004, making it the largest lifestyle magazine targeting Hispanic women in the nation. CATALINA's clients have included Burger King, ExxonMobil, Volvo, Southwest Airlines, Marshalls, Kodak and many others.
For over a decade, Cathy worked as a contributing editor for The Washington Post Magazine, creating her popular “First Person Singular” column showcasing one-on-one interviews with First Lady Laura Bush, Secretary of State James Baker, Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Senator Al Franken, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, and countless others.
As a Latina publisher, long-time Washington Post Magazine contributing editor, and certified public high school teacher, Cathy’s controversial views on U.S. politics, Latino issues, pop culture and the state of the nation’s education system has caught of attention from national and international media. In addition to serving as a frequent guest on shows including Fox News’ O’Reilly Factor, Fox Business Channel’s Stuart Varney show, HLN’s Prime News, Cathy has also appeared on CNN’s AC360, the Dr. Drew show, Fox’s Hannity show, and MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown. Cathy also appeared in a PBS special about her role as a Latina entrepreneur.
Cathy is the author of the non-fiction inspirational book: Latino Wisdom, and is currently working on her second non-fiction book about the power of women.
