Emily Lakdawalla
Bio:
Emily Lakdawalla is a passionate advocate for the exploration of all of the worlds of our solar system. Through blogs, photos, videos, podcasts, print articles, Twitter, and any other medium she can put her hand to, Lakdawalla shares the adventure of space exploration with the world. She has been writing and editing the Planetary Society Blog since 2005, reporting on space news, explaining planetary science, and sharing beautiful space photos.
Lakdawalla holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in geology from Amherst College and a Master of Science degree in planetary geology from Brown University. She has taught science to 5th and 6th grade students, and came to The Planetary Society in 2001 to lead a public outreach project on NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission. In addition to editing the blog, she appears weekly on the Society's "Planetary Radio" show, aired on more than 200 public radio stations and Sirius and XM satellite radio, answering listener questions or rounding up the latest space news from the blog.
Lakdawalla received the prestigious Jonathan Eberhart Planetary Journalism Award from the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society in 2011. She is increasingly in demand as a public speaker to science and astronomy events for adults and children of all ages, trusted by scientists to interpret their work correctly and communicate about it clearly. In On July 12, 2014, asteroid (274860) Emilylakdawalla was named for Lakdawalla.
Lakdawalla is also a contributing editor to Sky and Telescope Magazine, for whom she has written articles about Mars, the Moon, outer planets, spacecraft imaging, and Kuiper belt objects. She is currently writing her first book, about the Curiosity rover mission, to be published by Springer-Praxis in 2015.
