Women’s Media Center Congratulates Sheryl Sandberg on Appointment as First Woman on Facebook Board

June 26, 2012

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Women’s Media Center congratulates Sheryl Sandberg on her appointment to the Facebook board, becoming the first woman to serve on the seven-man board.

“Facebook is wise and lucky to have Sheryl Sandberg as second in command and now on its board -- lucky because any company would be glad to have her, and wise in correcting its error in going public with an all male and all white board that does not represent Facebook’s diverse users who are more than 60 percent female,” said Gloria Steinem, co-founder of the Women’s Media Center. “Mark Zuckerberg has taken a great first step toward a board that’s at least 50 percent female and reflects diverse racial and ethnic realities.”

The announcement was made yesterday by Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive officer of Facebook. The social networking company had come under public fire for the lack of women on its board. Sandberg, who is chief operating officer of Facebook, joined the company in 2008. She also serves on The Walt Disney Company, Woman for Woman International, the Center for Global Development and V-Day.

“We’re so proud of Sheryl for busting Facebook’s glass ceiling,” said Julie Burton, President of the Women’s Media Center. “We now look to Facebook to further expand by bringing other women into the boardroom.”

Aside from Zuckerberg, the board includes Donald Graham, CEO of Washington Post Co. and venture capitalist Mark Andreessen, co-founder of Netscape Communications Corp.

The Women’s Media Center was founded in 2005 by Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan and Steinem.  The Women’s Media Center works to make women and girls visible and powerful in the media. It does this through media advocacy campaigns, media monitoring for sexism, creating original content, training women and girls to participate in media, and connecting women experts with the media. The Center has offices in Washington, D.C., and New York City.
