Launch of “Historic” V-Day Festival

Tonight I join Kerry Washington, Kathy Bates, Marcia Gay Harden, Marian Seldes, and Shiva Rose at New York’s Studio 54 to open a festival that will bring the issue of violence against women front and center in the culture and community. Presented by the global movement V-Day, our reading of Eve Ensler’s play, “Necessary Targets,” sets off an unprecedented two weeks of events, June 12 to 27, urging all New Yorkers to “make NYC the safest place on earth for women and girls.”

With support from city leaders including New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, and in partnership with the Rockefeller Foundation, Verizon, and other sponsors, “Until the Violence Stops/NYC” features more than 50 community events. Numerous celebrities—Salma Hayek, Rosario Dawson, Brittany Murphy, Rosie O’Donnell, Isabella Rossellini, and more—will perform powerful, new, specially written monologues by an amazing roster of authors including Edward Albee, Tariq Ali, Michael Cunningham, Ariel Dorfman, Michael Eric Dyson, Nicholas Kristof, Robin Morgan, Anna Deavere Smith, and Alice Walker.

Featuring a panel on Women in Conflict Zones, a run through Prospect Park, and a workshop for men and boys among its many events, the festival invites participants from all over New York. Posters in all the subways and on the buses will be hard to miss as V-Day takes over the city. One way or another, people in New York will know about this historic event. I’m excited to be a part of it.
