13 December 06 – Pfc. Jesse Spielman is arraigned at Fort Campbell. He defers entering a plea. His trial, by a panel of officers and enlisted soldiers, is set for 2 April 07. The possibility of death penalty is dropped. 15 December 06 – Bryan Howard is granted a new Article 32 Hearing by military judge Col. Stephen R. Henley, to allow his defense team to introduce extenuating and mitigating evidence not allowed at the original Article 32 hearing. Another defense motion, aiming to suppress statements made by Howard to investigators and to another Soldier, is denied. 10 January 07 – The Associated Press reports that Steven Green was diagnosed as a homicidal threat by a military mental health team a full three months before the Mahmoudiya atrocity. 17 January 07 – Cortez’s attorney (William Cassara) announces that he will plead guilty to all charges except premeditated murder (instead pleading guilty to felony murder). In return the death penalty will be dropped. 20 February 07 – Court martial of Sgt. Paul Cortez begins at Fort Campbell under military judge Col. Stephen R. Henley. 22 February 07 - Cortez is sentenced to 100 years imprisonment and a dishonorable discharge. He is found not guilty of premeditated murder but guilty of felony murder. Under the terms of his plea agreement, he avoids the military judge’s harsher sentence of life imprisonment without possibility of parole. Instead, he will be eligible for parole in only 10 years. 23 February 07 – Pfc. Jesse Spielman attends his motions hearing at Fort Campbell. 23 February 07 – A scheduled motions hearing at Fort Campbell for Pfc. Bryan Howard is cancelled. 12 March 07 – First anniversary of the Mahmoudiya atrocity against Abeer and her family. 22 March 07 – Pfc. Bryan Howard’s court martial due to begin. 23 March 07 – Spielman motions hearing due to take place. 2 April 07 – Pfc. Jesse Spielman’s court martial due to begin. Fall 07 – Steven Green’s federal trial currently expected to take place.
