Women’s Media Center Announces First Annual Girls’ State of the Union Video Contest

New York, NY: Today the Women’s Media Center (WMC) launches their first annual Girls’ State of the Union Video Contest for girls ages 14-22. Julie Burton, President of the Women’s Media Center, says “Girls are a vital part of our nation and play an important role as problem solvers and media leaders. We invite them to create a 1-5 minute video to tell us what they think is the state of the union for girls.” Like the State of the Union report issued by the President of the United States, the Girls’ State of the Union will sum up the condition of the country—with special emphasis on the welfare of girls—and an outline of what the President’s legislative agenda and priorities for Congress should be.
Julie Burton says, “Girls’ State of the Union provides girls with the opportunity to listen to each others’ voices, own their expertise, create media on their own terms, and be heard in the world.” Gloria Steinem, co-founder of the Women’s Media Center, believes that “Every adult woman has to remember that when she passes a mirror and criticizes her body, a girl is watching. She is learning to be self-condemning, too. The media is responsible for girls who regard their bodies as ornaments, not instruments, but we are each responsible, too.”
The video contest launches on November 16, 2011 and the application and submission process will end on November 30, 2011. Five finalists will be featured on the Women’s Media Center YouTube channel to showcase their video content. The contest winner will be flown to Washington, DC, along with her parents or guardians, to present her State of the Union report at the National Press Club in January 2012.
The Women’s Media Center and a coalition of prominent girls’ organizations and leaders will be judging the applicants’ submissions. Among this group of diverse and talented celebrity and new media influencer judges will be former NBC anchor and Women’s Media Center founding president Carol Jenkins, current Women’s Media Center president Julie Burton, actors Marisa Tomei and Kyra Sedgwick, and Women’s Media Center co-founder and activist Gloria Steinem.
The Girls’ State of the Union Video Contest will focus on amplifying the opinions and voices of young girls because, as Gloria Steinem says, “We can't be what we can't see – media tell our stories and influence how girls imagine their future possibilities.” The Women’s Media Center was founded in 2005 by Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem to make women visible and powerful in media. ###
