WMC Statement on Recently Released Photograph of Rihanna
February 20, 2009The Women’s Media Center objects to TMZ.com, the New York Post and the hundreds of other media outlets who published the illegally obtained LAPD incident photograph of singer Rihanna. As an alleged victim of domestic violence, Rihanna deserves what all other women deserve: legal justice and a right to privacy. The assault of a woman by her partner remains a singular threat to women’s health. According the U.N.’s Study on the Status of Women, Year 2000, a woman is battered in the U.S. every 15 seconds, usually by her intimate partner. Earlier this week, the Los Angeles Times came under fire for revealing Rihanna’s name in print. The Women’s Media Center urges media outlets to weigh very carefully the public’s right to know, with an alleged victim’s right to privacy, and to not further circulate this photograph.
