Development Director – Job Description The Women’s Media Center is seeking a passionate and highly committed Development Director who will be responsible for the cultivation of new and existing donors, managing and pursuing foundation gifts, stewardship of long‐term relationships with key individuals, and implementing effective online and direct mail fundraising campaigns. This position provides an excellent opportunity to help shape the growth and vision of a dynamic progressive organization. About the Women’s Media Center The Women's Media Center (WMC) is a national, non-partisan, non-profit, progressive women’s media organization based in New York City.  We were founded in 2005 by Jane Fonda, Robin Morgan, and Gloria Steinem to make women visible and powerful in the media. Through our advocacy, original content, and media and leadership training, the WMC works to amplify women’s voices and change the conversation. Responsibilities
  • Proactively build, coordinate, maintain and deepen relationships with current and prospective donors to communicate the WMC’s mission and to solicit continued and increasing financial support for the WMC’s goals
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan
  • Create and implement a donor communications calendar
  • Oversee and conduct research to identify and cultivate new donor prospects
  • Prepare the President, Board members, and staff for donor cultivation and solicitation; accompany on donor visits
  • Prepare and communicate reports for donors
  • Review and respond effectively to donor questions, comments, ideas and information requests
  • Work with President to create new fundraising strategies and tactics, evaluate and analyze campaign progress and make recommendations to improve results on a regular basis
  • Manage the Development Intern
  • Develop and implement donor benefit and recognition activities
  • Write text for and oversee development of solicitations, electronic marketing, response materials, thank you cards and donor correspondence
  • Adhere to a budget and focus on meeting fund-raising goals
  • Maintain strong communication with the President, Board of Directors and donors via newsletters or other publications to demonstrate financial need and show the fiscal responsibility of the organization
Grants
  • Research and proactively pursue new foundation gifts
  • Write grant proposals for foundations
  • Submit appropriate paperwork for all existing foundation grants, providing regular communication, submitting reports, and sustaining relationships.
Events
  • Plan and implement events for the WMC that will meet our specific event revenue targets and amplify the WMC mission & vision, including WMC Media Awards in LA and NYC
  • Cultivate and solicit corporate sponsorship support, providing benefits at the appropriate level
  • Manage fundraising consultants
Other
  • Represent the WMC publicly and serve as an ambassador to current and potential major donors
  • Meet regularly with program staff to ensure comprehensive, up to date knowledge of the WMC’s accomplishments, current priorities and emerging issues
Professional Requirements
  • Minimum 7 years of fundraising experience with proven results in a non‐profit setting
  • At least 3 years staff management experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required
  • Strong commitment to the WMC’s mission
  • Track record of directly soliciting and securing major gifts ($25,000+).
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving, strategic thinking abilities and excellent judgment
  • High level of motivation, creativity, determination and independence
  • Demonstrated ability to provide compelling presentations to major donors, partner organizations and the public
  • Experience developing successful donor communications
  • Strong management skills, with a track record of leading teams and inspiring them to achieve benchmarks of success
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills and ability to effectively manage multiple projects
  • Superior attention to detail, strong follow‐through and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office and fundraising database management systems (knowledge of GiftWorks and Democracy in Action a plus)
  • Flexibility and a good sense of humor
  • Ability to travel occasionally
Salary and Benefits Salary is negotiable depending on experience and is comparable to other non-profit organizations of similar size. This is a full-time exempt position based in New York City.  Competitive health and vacation benefits.
