Oprah’s New Network “OWN” Bans The Word "Bitch"
October 29, 2010
In January, Oprah Winfrey will launch her cable channel, the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). With it, she'll send a strong message against sexism in the media: She's banning the word "bitch."
Winfrey announced at the Maria Shriver Women’s Conference that she wants OWN to be "fun and entertaining without tearing people down and calling them bitches. Imagine that. Imagine."
The Women's Media Center applauds Oprah for pioneering a safe space in this frequently misogynistic media landscape. "Bitch" is hateful word that degrades and dismisses women, and its use often aims at diminishing women's voices. This ban is a symbolic stand to legitimize and amplify women's presence in the media.
