Summary: originally, nation building referred to newly independent countries shaping and creating themselves, their institutions, and their national identities. Today it is used more often in the case of a super power (well, okay, the United States) going in to shape a country the way it ought to be. This is not easy, as the neoconservatives are finding out. One school of thought believes we could use some of that nation-building energy right here at home.
