Jane Fonda joins Gloria Steinem & Gabourey Sidibe in Conversation at NY Premiere of Jane Documentary

April 19, 2011

New York: The Women's Media Center (WMC) is hosting Jane Fonda (WMC Co-Founder), Gabourey Sidibe, Gloria Steinem (WMC Co-Founder), and Marlo Thomas for the New York City premiere of D.A. Pennebaker's (The War Room, Don't Look Back) documentary Jane on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at The Paley Center for Media at 8:00pm.

Jane Fonda says, "D.A. Pennebaker’s film captures an honest portrayal of me as a young woman and actor, and reveals my unformed self with all its painful insecurities.  It also shows the complex layers of the interactions of gender, power, and the struggle for an authentic voice at a time of change for me personally and for women in society.  I am supporting the release of this film in the hope that it will demonstrate to women – especially young women – that you can grow and evolve as an actor and as a human being.”

Julie Burton, President of the Women's Media Center, says "Jane Fonda is an archetype of the modern American woman’s experience.  She has lived a public life that has reflected the politics, culture, trends, and changes that American women have gone through over the past five decades.  With the release of Jane, Jane Fonda is opening a dialogue about women, gender, and power. The Women’s Media Center is proud to be the beneficiary of this special event.”

Gabourey Sidibe, says  "Jane Fonda is a role model and has become a friend.  Her courage in sharing this D.A. Pennebaker record of her lack of voice as a young woman and actor is an inspiration to me because it lights a path for all of us. I look forward to this night of its premiere in New York, and the chance to share our stories in conversation afterward. We need more reality in media, and I’m proud to support the Women’s Media Center in its work toward that end.”

Proceeds will benefit the Women's Media Center's work to make women and girls visible and powerful in the media.
