Is Access to the Internet a Right? Deanna Zandt on CNN International (VIDEO)

July 2, 2010

On July 1, 2010, Finland granted its citizens the right to Internet access. The same day, Deanna Zandt, Progressive Women's Voices alumna, media technologist and author of Share This! How You Will Change the World With Social Networking, contributed her thoughts about this groundbreaking law on CNN International. An expert in the realm of technology and social media, Zandt sees the potential of this law to bring new ideas and conversations to people previously disconnected from their community. Zandt stated, "the Internet really should be viewed a public utility, much like we view electricity and running water." She expanded this comparison, calling fundamental access a way to provide educational, health, and business services to those traditionally outside the reach of the Internet. "Like running water," Zandt said, "it ends up benefiting everyone."
