The Women’s Media Center Mourns the Loss of Pioneering Journalist, Gwen Ifill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Women’s Media Center is deeply saddened by the death of Gwen Ifill, a pioneering journalist who helped reshape the media landscape.

“Gwen had a commitment to reporting the truth, the whole story,” said Pat Mitchell, chair of the Sundance Institute, founding co-chair and current board co-chair of the Women’s Media Center. “She modeled success with integrity. Her talent, dedication and impeccable professionalism shaped a path for all who followed. Like all women who break barriers, Gwen faced many hurdles through the years and over and over again, she proved herself ready to take on the challenges and overcome them. ”

Last year, Ifill and PBS Newshour co-anchor Judy Woodruff received the WMC Pat Mitchell Lifetime Achievement Award for exemplary media careers that stretched decades and eventually led them to become the first women to co-anchor a network news program.

“We are heartbroken at the passing of Gwen Ifill,” said WMC President Julie Burton. “She was a pioneering journalist and inspiration. Her voice will be greatly missed. Our condolences go out to her family.”

Ifill had reported for The Baltimore Evening Sun, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.  She also had been the political analyst and managing editor and moderator of “Washington Week” on PBS, appeared on Meet the Press, and been senior correspondent for “The NewsHour With Jim Lehrer.”  Earlier this year, Ifill co-moderated one of the presidential debates between former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders. She also moderated both the 2004 and 2008 vice presidential debates and authored The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.
