Gwen Ifill - a pioneering journalist
Last year, the Women’s Media Center was very proud to honor Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff with the WMC Pat Mitchell Lifetime Achievement Award. Gwen Ifill was a pioneering journalist and inspiration to us all. We are heartbroken about her passing and wanted to share her words from that wonderful evening with you.
Gwen Ifill, Women’s Media Awards, November 5, 2015
THANKS TO PAT MITCHELL AND THE WOMEN'S MEDIA CENTER FOR GIVING US THE BEST KIND OF AWARD -- THE KIND THAT TELLS US YOU KNOW AND APPRECIATE THE WORK WE LOVE TO DO.
JUDY AND I ARE NOT STANDING HERE TOGETHER BY ACCIDENT. WE ARE THE FRUIT OF THE EFFORTS OF A LOT OF WOMEN, MEN AND VIEWERS WHO NEED TO KNOW MORE.
WE ARE THE RESULT OF COMMITMENT...AND A LOT OF SLEEPLESS NIGHTS.
DON'T BELIEVE ANYONE WHO TELLS YOU THAT DOING WHAT YOU LOVE COMES EASY. YOU HAVE TO LEARN HOW TO SMILE WHEN YOU DON'T MUCH FEEL LIKE IT...TO SPEAK UP WHEN YOU ARE THE ONLY WOMAN IN THE ROOM AND KNOW YOUR VIEWPOINT IS ESSENTIAL...AND TO SAY THANK YOU WHEN PEOPLE TELL YOU YOU ARE GOOD AT WHAT YOU DO.
SO, THANK YOU FOR HAVING OUR BACKS.
AT OUR BEST, WE ARE TRUTH TELLERS -- ALTHOUGH SOMETIMES IMPERFECT ONES.
AT OUR BEST, WE REJECT BIAS...AND UNDERSTAND THAT THE MOST DANGEROUS BIAS IS FOUND IN THE STORIES WE DO NOT TELL.
AT OUR BEST, WE ARE AGENTS OF UPLIFT...REMEMBERING THAT THERE IS GOOD AS WELL AS BAD IN THE WORLD...AND THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO.
BUT NONE OF THAT MATTERS IF NO ONE IS WATCHING, IF NO ONE WANTS TO LEARN.
WE NEED TO KNOW THAT WE ARE PAVING THE WAY FOR THE JUDYS AND GWENS WHO WILL TAKE OUR PLACE.
I MEET THEM EVERY DAY. I WANT TO BE THEM. I WANT THEM TO WANT TO BE ME.
FORTUNATELY, YOU HAVE THAT VISION AS WELL. IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT US. IT'S ABOUT WHAT COMES NEXT.
SO, ONCE AGAIN, TO PAT MITCHELL AND TO THE WOMEN'S MEDIA CENTER, TO PBS...AND TO VIEWERS LIKE YOU...THANK YOU.
