Gloria Steinem and Major Women Journalists Speak Out on Jill Abramson Firing

Women’s Media Center’s flagship show hosts discussion on women and The New York Times

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today the Women’s Media Center released this week’s WMC Live with Robin Morgan radio show that features an exclusive: the first public comments that Gloria Steinem--a Women’s Media Center co-founder together with Jane Fonda and Morgan--has made about Abramson’s dismissal.

WMC Live with Robin Morgan is an hour-long, weekly show. Steinem’s comments are part of a roundtable this week, which includes board members of the Women’s Media Center who are themselves award-winning journalists:  Carol Jenkins, WMC founding president, Emmy-awardee, and former WNBC New York news anchor; Geneva Overholser, former member of the New York Times editorial board and former chair of the Pulitzer Prize Board; Soraya Chemaly,  writer, media critic, and activist.

“This roundtable of distinguished journalists offers a wealth of in-depth analyses and insight about the Times firing of Abramson,” said Robin Morgan, author, activist, and host of Women’s Media Center Live. “Since the Times' motto is ‘All the News That's Fit to Print,’ women are now wondering if the Sulzbergers are still fit to publish.”

“When an event this important happens, it’s great to have a program like Women’s Media Center Live with Robin Morgan that can devote a full show to covering this topic,” said Julie Burton, president of the Women’s Media Center and executive producer of WMC Live.  “These journalists are part of our WMC family —founders or board members.  As a group, they represent a broad spectrum of media platforms, experience, and perspectives.”

Women’s Media Center Live with Robin Morgan airs Saturdays on CBS radio (WJFK 1580) at 11:00 a.m. ET and normally posts worldwide online the same day at WMCLive.com and iTunes (see Facebook and Twitter). This week, the show is already available now via podcast at WMCLive.com and on iTunes.  Here is a direct link to the program:  http://bit.ly/1m5Ztr2

Morgan is a best-selling, award-winning author and activist. She has appeared on “MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell Reports” and “Jansing & Co.,” “The Charlie Rose Show,” “NBC News,” “C-SPAN,” “Good Morning America,” “The Today Show,” “CBS This Morning,” “The Tonight Show,” “Larry King Live” and numerous other programs around the world.

The Women’s Media Center works to make women and girls visible and powerful in the media through strategic programs that transform the media landscape, and that include media training, media monitoring and activism, media reports, media programs, an expert database (WMC SheSource) and special initiatives.
